Surkanda Devi Temple
Surkanda Devi Temple is a revered Shakti Peeth located near Dhanaulti in Uttarakhand, India. The temple is situated at an altitude of 2,756 meters (9,042 feet) and is dedicated to Goddess Sati, also known as Surkanda Devi.
History and Mythology
The temple's origins are rooted in Hindu mythology, where it's believed that Goddess Sati's head fell at this spot when Lord Shiva was carrying her corpse after her self-immolation. The name "Surkanda" translates to "Sati's head", signifying the temple's importance.
Trek and Accessibility
The temple is accessible via a 2-2.5 km trek from Kaddukhal village, which takes around 1.5-2 hours to complete. Alternatively, a ropeway is available, covering a distance of 502 meters and taking approximately 10-15 minutes. The ropeway costs ₹205 per person for a two-way ticket.
Architecture and Views
The temple features traditional Himalayan stone architecture with a conical shikhara and a trishul atop. The surrounding landscape offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, including Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath.

The ideal time to visit Surkanda Devi Temple is from March to June and September to November, when the weather is pleasant and clear skies offer stunning mountain views.
